Elected in 2009, David is serving his third term on the Charlotte City Council – giving back to the city and community that has given him so much.
David grew up on the west side and has grown right alongside the growth of Charlotte. From his time at Berean Junior Academy to graduating from UNC Charlotte, to getting his first job, David has taken advantage of our city’s educational and economic opportunities. He has seen what this city can do for people like him and serving in our government gives him a chance to take the lessons of fairness and hard work that his mother taught him and ensure our city works as well for everyone as it did for him.
David has worked at The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership since 1997 and is now Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Fund Development. The Housing Partnership is the largest developer of affordable, workforce housing in the region, helping develop more than 2,500 housing units. After growing up in Charlotte, working in housing development and listening to community input, David knows how important affordable housing is to Charlotte’s future.
David also understands the need for reliable, efficient and sustainable transportation options. He co-chairs the Transportation and Planning Committee and served on the Red Line Transit Task Force. By co-chairing the Transit Finance Working Group, he also is working with other municipalities in the area to ensure Charlotte’s transit system is seamlessly integrated across the region. David has been working in Charlotte his whole career and knows that better transit options mean better commutes to work.
Despite all his community involvement, David is still makes sure to enjoy time with his wife, Mary Walker-Howard, their four children and two grandchildren.
